The first time I heard my furniture referred to as art, I was a little awed. But, the way I felt about figured wood included the reverence one has for anything of great beauty. And, maybe that is art. So, I started designing and crafting furniture with the intent of building it with the most stunning, figured wood I could find. The results pleased me and the folks buying my work. I learned along the way that to build even the most basic table with the highly figured grain of a Birdseye Maple or a Curly Cherry or Crotch Black Walnut, and then finish it with a clear beeswax / linseed oil transcends the ordinary. Even a basic Shaker side table suddenly took on a sophisticated contemporary look when built with superior quality wood. That's where I am today- designing and making furniture one piece a time out of wood that stimulated the senses. It finally came to me about the analogy of furniture as art: using the beauty and color of special wood to add depth and contrast to enhance the form and function of utilitarian pieces. I guess that's Go Figured. |
